5th Grade Float Information

First, thank you to everyone volunteering to help! So – THANK YOU! If I don’t say it enough over the next few weeks, please know you are appreciated.

Here’s where we are…

The theme this year is “To Youth & Beyond”. Obviously the first thing we thought of was Buzz Lightyear and his jet pack for space travel so the idea we came up with was a youth space shuttle. Then our very own creative 5th grader came up with an even better suggestion, an MPE rocket. It should be a simple, great-looking float for the kids to build.

Here are some opportunities to get this rolling:

Home Depot Supplies (costs are approximate)
(7) 4'X8' 7/16" OSB Plywood ($5.5o each)
(10) 8' 2"X2" PT Pine ($3.00 each)
(64) 1/4"X1-5/16" Pine Lattice (70 cents each)
(1) 48" Chicken Wire 10' roll ($12.65)
(1) 24" Chicken Wire 50' roll ($18.60)
(8) 10' 2x6 Pine Lumber pieces ($5.90 each)
(8) Blue Indoor/Outdoor Carpet ($4.45/sq yd)

• Parent volunteers (2 each session) to check in/out kids on work days
• Parent volunteers at every session to work with groups of kids to keep them on task
• Parent to be in charge of candy to be tossed at the parade
• Parent(s) to be in charge of the final work day PARTY (refreshments, music, etc)
• Parent to be in charge of drawing for float riders
• Parent to be in charge of fundraising (either monetary or supplies) – our budget is limited!

The Mimms are letting us use their farm again for the work sessions. We do have a truck and trailer.

Here is a tentative schedule:

Sunday 9/12 – go over design and assign tasks/start construction
Sunday 9/19 - construction
Sunday 9/26 – construction
Sunday 10/3 – details (tissue, decorating, etc)
Thursday 10/7 – finishing touches
Friday 10/8 – finishing touches
Saturday 10/10 – PARADE!!! All entries must be lined up by 9:00am.
Sunday 10/11 – Breakdown everything so I can return the trailer. Also clean up at the Mimms Farm. They have been wonderful over the years to let us use their property so we need to make sure to leave NO MESSES!

If I have forgotten anything, please let me know. I know there will be plenty of confusion, so anything we can do now will be a huge help.

Thanks,
Cindy Stetson
